AEEE in partnership with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and the Karnataka Renewable Energy Department Ltd (KREDL) organized a workshop on Energy Efficiency of the Hospital and the Healthcare Sector in Bangalore on 8th November 2011. Ms Hema Hattangady, Founder AEEE and the immediate past chairperson, in her welcome address indicated how AEEE is serving to create a much desired platform for EE professionals and welcomed the audience to actively partner with AEEE in its venture in creating an EE market transformation in India.
In his inaugural address Mr UK Ananthapadmanabhan, CEO, Kirloskar Hospital Project, shared his experiences across prominent hospitals like the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai , the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH), Coimbatore for 2 decades. His presentation indicated his strong domain knowledge, insight of design and implementation of IT solutions in large hospitals, that helped hospitals create tremendous energy savings and reduced operation costs. His efforts were appreciated notably when KMCH won India’s Best IT-enabled hospital award for the year 2010 and also the National Energy Conservation Award 2010.
Mr NS Prasanna Kumar, IAS, MD, KREDL, Karnataka gave the theme address. Mr Kumar welcomed AEEE’s effort in convening hospitals and energy efficiency solution providers. He said that KREDL is planning bundling of hospitals for its EE and RE programmes and encouraged AEEE to form efforts towards this initiative. The role of EE in the healthcare sector was further emphasized by Mr Sanjay Seth, Energy Economist, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, who informed the audience that BEE is soon launching the labelling scheme for hospital facilities. Mr Seth reminded the audience that it was AEEE’s third anniversary and appreciated AEEE’s efforts in bridging the gap between policy makers and the industry over a short span of time of since its launch..

- The first session on “Energy & Water Management Issues in Hospitals” was chaired by Mr Bernd Stampfl (Head, Energy Solutions, Siemens Ltd) saw discussions on Solutions for Healthcare Industry (Amresh Deshpande, Schneider-Electric), Needs & Challenges of Hospital: The End-users Perspective( Dr Sunil Simon (NCorporate), Ecolabelling Methodology for Benchmarking Hospitals (Vivek Gilani, No2CO2 and ECE Pvt. Ltd) and the Health Sector response to Sustainability (Nishant Goyal, Emergent Ventures International).
- The session on “Technologies & Solutions”, chaired by Dr Chandrashekar Hariharan (Founder, BCIL), had active discussions on Achieving higher efficiencies in Lighting (ISLE-KSC, Mr Bhavani Prasad, Ex-DG, CPWD), Efficient Lighting Options (Mr. Sridhar Dubba, Philips India), Heat Pump with & a Hospital Case Study (Rishi Kapoor, Johnson Controls), Smart Hospitals - Resource Management (energy, water, CO2) Systems to improve profitability & comfort for Hospitals (Sam Bose AquaMW) and Solar Energy Solutions (Sunil S. Bhat, TataBP Solar).
- The final Session on “Best Practices Energy Efficiency & Emerging Issues” was highlighted by EE Financing & ESCOs Business Models (Pradeep Kumar, ASE), Green Certification for Hospitals (PG Ganapathy, EcoFirst) and Benchmarking for Hospitals (Saket Sarraf, ps Collective)
Question-Answer sessions indicated that the participants wanted frequent interactions with the healthcare sector facilities. The one day workshop had about 50 participants from both the healthcare sector and energy efficiency and renewable energy solution providers and consultants, besides government agencies and hospital associations.
